Our Fall, shoulder season road trip was awesome! Great weather and empty campgrounds were the norm. We had a few challenges as always, water was shut off in most of the empty campgrounds in Montana. Many of the State and Federal campgrounds were closed completely but we still managed to find great places to camp and boondock.

We headed east over the mountains, stopped at Chickahominy for the night and then on to Burns and turned north on 395. We’ve never been on this section of 395, rugged mountains and few people greeted us! We pulled in and checked out the mostly empty campgrounds and stayed at a couple of them, only traveling short distances each day and enjoying our time.

At Rock Creek campground the wind came up and a couple of trees came crashing down. We pulled out into the middle of the CG where no trees could hit us. Got cold overnight and snowed in the morning!

Went through John Day and then turned on Hwy 7 towards Phillips Lake. Spent a day driving around and spent some time at Sumpter and Granite! Then east to the prairie of eastern OR where the wild sunflowers were in bloom as far as the eye could see!
